In order to qualify for Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Scholarships, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Required Language: English and Japanese
  • Eligible Countries: The student without Japanese citizenship from all nations around the globe.
  • While the student enrolling in a professional graduate school is generally not eligible to apply, those who are able to submit a research plan can still apply.
  • The student must have a birthdate after August 31, 1984 in order to be eligible for the PhD program. Similarly, for the master’s program, the student must have a birthdate after August 31, 1989.
  • After graduation, the student must possess a strong determination to contribute to their home country, without necessarily having a guaranteed job or an immediate return after completing university.
  • The student’s involvement as an alumni member requires a thorough grasp of international friendship and goodwill, as well as their attendance at foundation-organized events and active participation in the network.
  • The student is required to have the ability to engage in a casual conversation in Japanese. All interviews will be conducted exclusively in Japanese.

How to Apply for Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Awards?

To avail the Foreign Students Scholarship, it is crucial to follow the important steps outlined below:

Access the web application system and complete the application form, ensuring that you upload all the necessary documents.

  • Academic transcript:
    i) To complete your application, please include your academic transcript from the university where you earned your undergraduate degree. Additionally, provide transcripts for any other courses you have taken or are currently taking. If you transferred into our university, we also require a transcript from your previous school. Photocopies of these transcripts will suffice.
  • To apply for the scholarship, you need to fill out three forms: a scholarship application form, a resume, and a personal information form. These forms are available for download on the website. Ensure that you attach your photo to the application form and complete all sections in Japanese using either typed or handwritten responses.
  • Research plan: To effectively convey your thoughts in Japanese, ensure to address the following four aspects: i) provide an outline of your research; ii) present a projected schedule spanning from the present until graduation; iii) articulate your future plans and goals; iv) discuss any past research endeavors you may have undertaken. It is recommended to submit 2-4 pages, either typed or handwritten.
  • A letter of recommendation is required from an academic supervisor, which should be confidential and include the applicant’s academic accomplishments, personal character, and potential for future success. The length and style of the letter are not restricted. If you have a strong relationship with your previous academic supervisor, you may request them to write the recommendation letter for you.
  • If an entrance examination has not yet been conducted or the successful candidates for the examination have not been announced at the time of applying for this scholarship, please indicate the scheduled date of the examination or announcement on the application form. If you are already enrolled in a graduate school, please submit a photocopy of your current enrollment certificate.
  • A confidential recommendation letter is required from an academic supervisor, highlighting the applicant’s academic accomplishments, personal qualities, and future potential. The length and style of the letter are not specified. If the applicant has a strong relationship with their former academic supervisor, they may request them to write the recommendation letter.
  • Please ensure that the documents are prepared in either Japanese or English. If you have documents in any other languages, please include a translation in either Japanese or English.
